Delft

This charming old Dutch town is known for its blue and white ceramics, and as the home of one of the greatest painters of the Golden Age, Johannes Vermeer.

Two of his famous works, Girl with the Pearl Earring and View of Delft are in the Mauritshuis museum in the Hague. I was incredibly impressed with them. The movie Girl with the Pearl Earring was also filmed here.

A great place to spend the day and only short tram ride from The Hague.

Vermeer grew up on this street but his house was torn down to build the canal, which I'm standing over to take the shot. I saw Delft in many of his paintings at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum.

Can you see the tower of the Oude Kerk (old church) leaning?
Along with Vermeer, many famous people are buried in this church, including Admiral Tromp who was supposed to have sailed with a broom at his masthead, a token of his intention to sweep the seas of enemy ships.
